Throughout the year we're going to be adding details of the various holidays and festivals celebrated by our ladies, so that you can check in regularly to see if there's an important date coming up that you should mention in your letters to the ladies you correspond with. We'll start with the Christmas period, known as the Winter Holidays, which actually spans a longer period than other countries are accustomed to. This is partly due to the mixture of religions in the ex-USSR countries. If, for example, you travel from the west of Ukraine towards the east, you will encounter less emphasis on Christian holiday dates as we know them, and more bias towards the old Russian Orthodox calendar. So Christmas Day, for example, actually falls on January 7th! As Christmas has now passed, we'll be giving you more information you should know later this year, but you should now be thinking about wishing your ladies "Happy Old New Year"! January 14th - Old New Years Day - This popular holiday corresponds to January 1st in the Julian calendar, and was used in Russia before 1918. Many Ukrainians and Russians celebrate the New Year twice, on January 1st and 14th. Happy Old New Year! - S Novym starym godom! Schastlivogo starogo Novogo goda!
